Nicknamed "Flying Bricks" by their crews, who tend
to be maniac pilot-engineers capable of hotwiring a rock into a
replicator and back again in the name of damage control, these
unsubtle, form-follows-function craft are purely and simply designed to
get equipment and troops from orbit to the surface as quickly as
possible, and achieve this...the easy way. Engines and ancillary
equipment are only really present to make the landing more comfortable,
in a "not creating large red-stained craters" manner, and to retrieve
the ship afterwards.
Almost universally operated by, or on loan from, FLEET
(Boardies prefer more staid deployment methods), they can carry up to
an entire company in cramped environments, although normally one ship
will carry the infantry and another any armoured vehicles (the interior
must be specially sectioned to cushion the occupants). Heavily armoured
to shield against re-entry, they also carry light weapons to suppress
any enemy elements in the dropzone, but are escorted by fighters
wherever possible. Flights tend to be short, unpleasant, and unsubtle –
exactly the kind of dramatic entrance most marines love. The nature of
most Board work these days ensures these tough little ships see plenty
of use.
