Baiame-class
Short-Ranged Transport Shuttle
Dimensions: 22m x 18m x 4m (approx.)
Powerplant: 1 x Main Power Unit (fusion), 1 x Secondary
Power Unit (fusion)
Propulsion: 2 x TD-100 traction drives, each producing
100kN of thrust (max)
Speed: Mach 6 (cruising), Mach 15 (max)
Crew: 3 - Pilot, Co-pilot, Loadmaster/Gunner. Up to
30 embarked passengers (usually no more than 12).
Weapons: 3 x Antipersonel plasma cannons.
The Baiame-class
shuttlecraft is new to the Funky
Horror support fleet, a rapid streamlining of a nominally
ship-to-ship FLEET shuttle design. The Baiame
has been designed to provide tactical marine emplacement in hot combat
zones
quickly and safely, as a compliment to standard high-capacity troop
dropships. It also doubles as the preferred surface-to-orbit shuttle of
FLEET officers, and the appearance of their signature swept wings and
high tail usually means a ground operation is about to be "favoured" by
a visit from the Gold Braid Brigade.
While not as modular as the Arcadia,
a Baiame's
interior can be swiftly refitted without much difficulty. The standard
cabin layout
consists of little more than two dozen pairs of foot-clamps for power
armour-encased
marines, plus straps for the loadmaster at the rear. More "refined"
passenger modules exist for personnel not wearing full battlesuits, and
several vessels have been fitted as "private jets" with plush seats,
bedding, cooking and bunking facilities for 2 or so.
While the traction drives do provide superior maneuverability, of
particular use in low speed combat situations and in orbit (where
maneuvers are not precluded by extreme changes in attitude) they do
produce large amounts of heat, especially climbing away from a planet.
Large air intakes and exausts are fitted to the
leading and trailing edges of the wing root to provide cooling during
the intense climbout phase of a mission. During
"normal" flight, where not fighting a planetary gravitational pull,
simple heat radiation will provide adequate cooling. Despite all these
precautions, engine overheating still remains a problem.
The cockpit is based on the Arcadia
for ease of training and pilot compatibility. Two hatches just in front
of the wing root facilitate entry and exit in non-combat situations,
while two short range matter transporter devices are used for rapid
armed disembarkment. The cockpit is open to the rest of the cabin.
The three turrets are recessed into the armoured hull of the vessel.
They are deployed once a safe velocity is reached (when in atmosphere)
and targets are designated by the co-pilot. The loadmaster can also
designate targets, should the need arise. The current model comes with
a basic ECM system, though there is an advanced ECM system under
developement for later fitment. This should greatly improve short-range
low-velocity combat survivability.
